General Questions
Do I need any experience to go dog sledding?
No. Most tours are designed for beginners. You’ll receive full instructions before the tour and be guided along the way. If you’re sharing a sled, you can take turns driving and riding as a passenger.
Can I drive the sled myself?
Yes. On most tours, guests take turns driving the sled and sitting in it. You’ll be shown how to steer, brake and communicate with the dogs.
Is dog sledding safe?
Yes. All recommended tours are run by experienced guides who prioritize safety for both guests and dogs. You’ll be briefed on how to handle the sled and what to do in different situations.
Families & Age Limits
Is dog sledding suitable for children?
Yes, many tours are family-friendly. Children usually ride as passengers with an adult. Age limits vary slightly depending on the tour, but kids as young as 4–6 years old can often join.
Do I need to be physically fit?
Moderate fitness is helpful. You may need to help push the sled uphill and stay balanced while standing. But if you’re riding as a passenger, physical effort is minimal.
Clothing & Weather
How cold will it be?
Temperatures in Alta range from –5°C to –25°C during the sledding season. It can feel colder due to wind chill. Luckily, tours provide thermal clothing and boots to keep you warm.
What should I wear?
Wear thermal base layers, wool or fleece mid layers, and warm socks. Bring a wool hat, neck gaiter, and gloves.
Dogs & Ethics
Are the dogs well treated?
Yes. All tour providers we recommend care deeply about their huskies. The dogs are healthy, well-fed, socialized and bred for sledding. They rest regularly and are never overworked.
Do the dogs enjoy pulling sleds?
Absolutely. These huskies are trained from a young age and love to run. You’ll see their excitement at the start of every tour.
Is dog sledding ethical?
It depends on the provider. That’s why we only feature small, local tours that meet high welfare standards. You can learn more about our values here: Ethical Dog Sledding in Alta.
